Summary

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this！ The first volume does a good job of setting up the premise （view spoiler）[（sheltered princess is rudely thrust into the real world due to a coup） while adding some twists that make it more interesting -- the person behind the coup is her beloved cousin， the man who saves her is her bodyguard but also the cousin's childhood friend -- so it is politics mixed up with the personal。 （view spoiler）[ What really makes it work， though， is that although Yona ha I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this！ The first volume does a good job of setting up the premise （view spoiler）[（sheltered princess is rudely thrust into the real world due to a coup） while adding some twists that make it more interesting -- the person behind the coup is her beloved cousin， the man who saves her is her bodyguard but also the cousin's childhood friend -- so it is politics mixed up with the personal。 （view spoiler）[ What really makes it work， though， is that although Yona has been sheltered and lived a life of great privilege， she very much wants to be a capable human being and once she recovers from the initial trauma & shock she immediately tries to figure out what to do and how to go about doing it。 This develops more in later volumes， of course， but there are already the hints of it here; this is not going to be the stereotypical reverse-harem story a la Fushigi Yuugi where the protagonist is almost too incapable to cross a room without needing to be rescued， but something that hits a lot of fun shoujo tropes while nonetheless aspiring to be more layered & interesting。 （hide spoiler）] （hide spoiler）] 。。。more

This was a great start to the series！ The plot twist that happened in the first volume was surprising and kept me hooked to find out why the character did what he did。 I am excited to see the romance between the two current main characters develop in the rest of the story。 The art matches the typical shoujo beat manga style but it is still drawn well。

I have mixed feelings about this one。 I liked it， so I want to make that part clear。 However， maybe I was expecting more than I got due to the high praise。 Maybe it does evolve into something I will fall in love with。 But for now， it's solid。 Basically Yona is a princess and is in love with the handsom Soo-Won。 Soo-Won is the good looking， charming， cousin of Yona。 Cousin you say？ Hey， that's just how we roll in the day。 And when Soo-Won comes to visit both her and his uncle to pay respect it lo I have mixed feelings about this one。 I liked it， so I want to make that part clear。 However， maybe I was expecting more than I got due to the high praise。 Maybe it does evolve into something I will fall in love with。 But for now， it's solid。 Basically Yona is a princess and is in love with the handsom Soo-Won。 Soo-Won is the good looking， charming， cousin of Yona。 Cousin you say？ Hey， that's just how we roll in the day。 And when Soo-Won comes to visit both her and his uncle to pay respect it looks like Yona is ready to confess her love。 But when a turn of events go bad， and someone dies， Yona must survive at all cost。 The idea of the story is solid if not done before。 I think the fact the "twist" were easy to see coming and nothing really surprised me。 And a chapter of a flashback worked okay though felt like I read this style of storytelling before。 Saying that I've already grown fond of the artstyle a lot。 I do also really enjoy the character of Hak。 Right away he comes off as a caring person， funny， and badass。 His push to help Yona become better， on top of helping her grow， while caring for her is all really endaring。 It's also nice to see his background， or some of it here， and it working on all levels。 Overall， it's a solid start that leaves me intrigued to see where we go。 I bought volume 1-3 so by the third volume I'll have a better idea if I'm going to embark on the entire （very long） quest of Yona of the Dawn， but for now I'm going onward。 A 3。5 out of 5。 。。。more

Love how Yona’s grief is portrayed in this volume。 It’s such a great set up for the rest of the series。 Plus， the humor is spot on。 Hak’s and Yona’s relationship is so funny and sweet。

（3。5 stars）I chose to buy this book because I heard the main character， Yona， had a strong woman lead。 They said that she's as strong as any of the men in this book， and they equally protect each other。 That was exciting for me and I came in with high expectations。 Hopefully， this is prevalent in the next few books， because in this volume she is the total opposite。 She doesn't get much important dialogue or scenes， and she's very dependent on her guard。 I'm excusing this， because it makes sense， （3。5 stars）I chose to buy this book because I heard the main character， Yona， had a strong woman lead。 They said that she's as strong as any of the men in this book， and they equally protect each other。 That was exciting for me and I came in with high expectations。 Hopefully， this is prevalent in the next few books， because in this volume she is the total opposite。 She doesn't get much important dialogue or scenes， and she's very dependent on her guard。 I'm excusing this， because it makes sense， since she did just get traumatized。 Another thing that bothered me going into the book was that the main love interest for Yona was her cousin。 I looked it up and apparently， it's legal in Japan， and pretty normal for royalty， back in the time the book takes place。 （It still makes me a bit uncomfortable to read） Other than that， it was a pretty good start to the series， nothing too amazing。 I especially love the scenes of the trio as children， they're all so adorable。 :） I'm excited to learn more about the characters， and I'm still hopeful for Yona's character development。 （I'll be reviewing a few of the other volumes since this is a long series） 。。。more

By far the best manga I have ever read。 The main protagonist （Yona） is a prime example of a strong female lead with an amazing character development。 Characters are well rounded and have compelling backstories。 I can recommend this manga to everyone。

4 red starsThis is about princess Yona， who has know Su-won and Hak all her life。 Hak works in the palace as Yonas guard。 Yona has always had a crush on Su-won。 But when Su-won visits the palace because of Yonas sixteenth birthday， something happens and Yona has to flee the palace with Hak。 This was a great start to a series。 It had me intrigued and I definitely wanna pick up the next volume in the series， to see what happens next。

I got super curious about this manga after my friend Laura mentioned it on her YouTube channel， and then I stumbled across an edited music video using scenes from the anime which looked super interesting so I researched and managed to watch most of the episodes and by then I was done for and throughly in love with these characters and this series， so I decided to pick up the manga。And I loved it just as much！！！！ 😍😍😍（And even though I LOVE the BEAUTIFUL artwork， I’m not a huge fan of this volume’ I got super curious about this manga after my friend Laura mentioned it on her YouTube channel， and then I stumbled across an edited music video using scenes from the anime which looked super interesting so I researched and managed to watch most of the episodes and by then I was done for and throughly in love with these characters and this series， so I decided to pick up the manga。And I loved it just as much！！！！ 😍😍😍（And even though I LOVE the BEAUTIFUL artwork， I’m not a huge fan of this volume’s cover。。。。）The characters are flawed and a bunch of lovable dorks I love SO MUCH， especially Yona and Hak—they are my faves and my ship that I will go down with until the end of time and so adorable， and it’s not even funny how much I love them！ *pauses to breathe* But in all honesty this manga is amazing （at least， coming from someone who has never read manga before this year） and extremely addictive in the best possible way as once I start reading I have a VERY hard time putting it down and don’t really want to either， LOL！ The story is gripping and at equal times tragic， beautiful， hilarious， and downright silly with just the right amount of humor to balance out all the seriousness and heart stopping action of everything going on。 And Yona， Hak， and Su-Won as kids are just precious， not gonna lie。 😍😭I loved this manga （and what I’ve seen of the anime！） and I can’t wait to dive into more of this series！Content: a lot of violence and blood （nothing over PG-13）， a few mentions of drinking and people being drunk though none of this is actually shown， a few mild swear words， one character tries advances on Yona （he is stopped before going too far）， Yona is interested in marrying her cousin （um， ew）， and at one point Yona is bathing and Hak sees her without clothes on （nothing is shown beyond what you’d see if someone wore a bikini） but quickly turns away and leaves with a scolding to himself to not think about it。 。。。more
